Before your trip starts

A great trip doesn’t start at the airport; it starts long before you pack your suitcase. Spending a little extra time planning can save you a surprising amount of money, reduce stress, and help you make the most of your adventure.

Don’t Accept the First Booking Offer

One of the biggest mistakes travelers make is booking the first flight or travel package they find. Take the time to compare different platforms and prices before making a decision. Websites like Skyscanner and Expedia are excellent tools for finding flights and travel packages, and they can often help you save a significant amount of money.

I personally never had to spend more than 400 euros on flights from Germany to the United States (including baggage and both flights). I also never had to spend much money on accommodation, even though I do value high quality places, because I just know how to book in a smart way. People never believe me when I tell them how little I spend on my Los Angeles trips, but it is true.

However, don’t stop there. Sometimes the best deal is actually on the airline’s own website. For example, airlines like Condor occasionally offer lower prices or exclusive benefits when you book directly. It only takes a few extra minutes to compare, and those minutes can easily save you a lot.

Be Flexible With Flights

Always check different connecting flight options instead of only looking for direct flights. A short layover can often make your ticket much cheaper.

It’s also worth comparing departures from different airports that are accessible to you. Smaller airports frequently offer lower fares than major international hubs, so being flexible with your departure location can lead to some great savings.

I, for example, live near Cologne, Germany. But when I want to fly somewhere, I always check flight options departing from Düsseldorf, Frankfurt and some cities in Belgium and the Netherlands as well.

Be Open to Different Types of Accommodation

When choosing where to stay, it’s completely okay to have high standards. After all, your accommodation can have a big impact on your overall travel experience. However, don’t let the number of stars be the only thing that influences your decision.

A well-rated 2-star hotel with hundreds of positive reviews can often provide a better experience than a basic 4-star hotel. Cleanliness, friendly staff, a great location, and comfortable beds usually matter much more than an extra star. Always take the time to read recent reviews and look at real guest photos before booking.

It’s also worth considering alternatives to traditional hotels. Airbnb offers everything from private rooms to entire apartments, giving you the chance to experience your destination more like a local. If you’re looking to save money or enjoy a unique experience, platforms like TrustedHousesitters can be a fantastic option. In exchange for looking after someone’s home or pets, you can stay in beautiful accommodations around the world at little to no accommodation cost.

Another great alternative is staying with a host family. Not only can it be more affordable, but it also gives you the opportunity to experience the local culture, enjoy home-cooked meals, and get insider tips from people who know the area best.

Keeping an open mind when choosing accommodation can save you money, introduce you to unforgettable experiences, and sometimes even become one of the highlights of your trip.

Pack Smart

Packing isn’t just about fitting everything into your suitcase, it’s about being prepared for different situations. Bring enough outfit options so you can adapt to changing weather, unexpected activities, or a nice dinner out without feeling underprepared.

A well-packed suitcase gives you more flexibility and helps you avoid unnecessary shopping during your trip.

But still remember to leave enough space to avoid paying extra for overweight luggage and also keep some space to shop.

Create a Simple Travel Plan

Before you leave, spend some time researching what you’d like to do at your destination. Social media platforms and travel blogs are full of hidden gems, restaurant recommendations, scenic viewpoints, and local experiences that you might otherwise miss.

Save your favorite tips, create a rough itinerary, and pin interesting locations on a map. You don’t have to schedule every minute, but having a plan helps you make the most of your time while still leaving room for spontaneous adventures.

A little preparation before your trip begins can make a huge difference. By booking wisely, packing smart, and planning ahead, you’ll save money, stay organized, and enjoy your travels even more.

How to live your best life on a budget

Enjoy Great Food Without Breaking the Bank

Saving money while traveling doesn’t mean you have to skip the restaurants you’ve always dreamed of visiting. Of course, it’s smart to look for affordable local spots, but don’t be afraid to treat yourself every now and then.

One thing I personally love doing is visiting restaurants that would normally be out of my budget and just tone it down. Instead of ordering appetizers, cocktails, or desserts, I simply stick to water (which is free in restaurants in the U.S.) and choose the most affordable dish on the menu that still looks delicious. Then I sit back and enjoy every bite.

It might sound a little unusual, but it’s allowed me to experience places like Chateau Marmont and Nobu Malibu without spending much money. For me, it’s not about ordering the most expensive meal, it’s about enjoying the atmosphere, the experience, the poeple and the food. Sometimes that’s all you need.

Make Connections

If I could give only one piece of travel advice, it would be this: be open to meeting people.

Some of the best memories you’ll ever make while traveling won’t come from sightseeing: they’ll come from the people you meet along the way. You don’t have to force conversations or become best friends with everyone, but simply being approachable and open-minded can completely change your trip.

The connections you make can lead to incredible opportunities. You might get invited to local events, parties, or gatherings. Someone may recommend hidden gems that you’ll never find on Google, offer you a ride somewhere, or introduce you to places only locals know about.

Sometimes those friendships even last far beyond the trip. Over the years, I’ve built friendships all over the world, and they’ve allowed me to return to destinations like Los Angeles, D.C., Athens, Paris, Barcelona, and London multiple times without having to pay for accommodation. That’s something that has completely changed the way I travel.

Of course, always use common sense. Trust your instincts, meet people in safe environments, and never ignore red flags. But if you have a good sense of people and stay aware of your surroundings, building genuine connections can easily become the most valuable part of your travels.

Research the Destination—Not Just the Tourist Attractions

One thing I’ve learned is that the most memorable experiences are often the ones that cost little or nothing at all.

Before you arrive, spend some time researching your destination beyond the typical tourist attractions. You’ll often discover beautiful beaches, scenic hiking trails, local parks, viewpoints, free museums, street markets, neighborhood cafés, bars, and live music that don’t require a big budget.

In my experience, expensive activities are rarely the highlight of a trip.

The more you know before you arrive, the easier it is to fill your trip with unforgettable experiences without spending a fortune.
